US measurements and weights

Whether you are traveling to the US or this is a classroom exercise, this is probably your one stop reference page to glance at how the measures work in the United States.

Measuring time

  • 1 minute (min.) = 60 seconds (sec.)
  • 1 hour (hr.) = 60 minutes
  • 1 day = 24 hours
  • 1 week = 7 days
  • 1 month = number days in a calendar month*
  • 1 quarter = 3 months
  • 1 year = 52 weeks
  • 1 calendar year = 365 days

Please note date in the US is written as month, day, and the year; for example, 12/6/1999.

* Number of days in a month:

  • 31 days in January, March, May, July, August, October, and December
  • 28 (in a regular year) or 29 (in a leap year) days in February
  • 30 days in April, June, September, and November

Measuring liquid

  • 1 cup (c.) = 8 fluid ounces (fl. oz.)
  • 1 pint (pt.) = 2 cups
  • 1 quart (qt) = 2 pints
  • 1 gallon (gal.) = 4 quarts

Measuring weight

  • 1 pound (lb.) = 16 ounces (oz.)
  • 1 hundredweight (cwt.) = 100 pound's
  • 1 ton (T) = 2,000 pounds

Measuring length

  • 1 foot (ft. or ') = 12 inches (in. or "]
  • 1 yard (yd.) = 36 inches or 3 feet
  • 1 rod (rd.) = 16 1/2 feet
  • 1 mile (mi.) = 5,280 feet, 1,760 yards, or 320 rods

Measuring area

  • 1 square foot (ft2 or sq. ft.) = 144 square inches
  • 1 square yard (yd2 or sq. yd.) = 9 square feet

Counting units

  • 1 dozen (doz.) = 12 units
  • 1 gross (gr.) = 144 units or 12 dozens
